Who should attend: LGBTQ+ people and others who are interested in supporting their mental health during holiday periods.

Purpose: The purpose of the session is to provide practical advice and support to LGBTQ+ people and others during holiday periods when raised expectations for activities and gatherings at work and at home can impact on mental health.

Summary: Holiday periods, regardless of when they happen throughout the year, are often marked with an increase in activities and gatherings with work colleagues, family and friends which can often negatively impact mental health, particularly for LGBTQ+ people. The aim of the session is to provide practical support for our mental health and wellbeing during these times. We will explore what happens during holiday periods to impact mental health and how the impact can be experienced and felt. Importantly, we will share practical ways we can support ourselves and others as we deal with our various situations and all they bring up for us. Speakers will share stories and invite those who feel comfortable to share their own experiences, reflections and ways they support their mental health.

Expected outcomes:

  • Attendees will gain an appreciation for different ways mental health may be impacted during holiday periods so they feel they are not alone if they experience mental health impact.

  • Attendees will learn practical techniques and tips to support their mental health and wellbeing during holiday periods and have the means to create their own ‘plan’ to support themselves during these periods.
