This is an online event that will be recorded and shared via the PSA YouTube channel.
Summary: Humans are living longer and are also working later into life. Health is important to those who do work later in life because being healthy means individuals can better support their career and life goals while they age. Men are more likely to experience chronic health conditions earlier than women and have shorter lives due to a number of factors including lack of awareness of their bodies and how aging impacts on their health. The male body has unique anatomy and physiology, and it is important to understand how age can impact on the male body, including those who identify as trans. We will be joined by Helen Lake, RN, an independent urology and specialised men's health expert, who will point out red flags, those things we should notice physiologically and pay attention to from a health perspective. Helen will also provide insights into what happens to the male body as we age to build confidence in men and those who have male bodies to safeguard their health. Jae and Roger will provide insight from their lived experiences as ‘elders’ and pose questions in a safe environment to have a conversation about topics that are too often avoided.
Purpose: The purpose of the event is to focus attention on the experience of queer men and those with male bodies from a professional and health perspective as they age. The aim is to provide practical and supportive advice and point people to resources to go deeper into relevant topics discussed. We will focus little on sexual health because there are plenty of amazing resources available on this topic, instead focusing almost purely on the aging of the anatomy and physiology of the male body as it ages, and how those with male bodies can best support and maintain good health.
Who should attend: While this session is focused on queer men and those with male bodies, all men and those with male bodies are invited. We also welcome healthcare practitioners, HR professionals who may want to better understand how to provide support for men and those who have male bodies in the workplace, and all others who want to gain insight into this topic.
Expected outcomes:
Attendees will gain more awareness understanding of the male body and how it is impacted by age.
Attendees will gain insights into what physiological ‘red flags’ to watch for and notice.
Attendees will gain confidence in managing their own health and have more confidence when interacting with healthcare practitioners about their health.
